Last night, a bona fide Oscar-winning Hollywood superstar made his way to an exciting corner of the Finchley Road to speak to a packed house at JW3. As would be expected for such an event, the demand was insatiable – leading to tickets being allocated through a ballot system, with a lucky 250 people being privileged to spend an hour and a half listening to the captivating storytelling of a truly legendary actor.

The evening was introduced by CEO of JW3, the man with the best sideburns in town, Raymond Simonson. He explained that upon hearing the news of Kevin Spacey agreeing to come to JW3, there was only one man they wanted to interview him, and that was Alan Yentob… Creative Director of the BBC and all-round temple of knowledge on movies and popular culture.

Our team (Blake and Elena) were on the scene bright and early, with enough time to spare for a very tasty Flat White at the brilliant Zest. We ensured that all our equipment was set up well in advance – including lighting stands in various locations one never knows exactly what shots will be needed or viable on such an occasion. We attended the staff briefing with all the JW3 teams, in order to be as prepared as possible.

The event was truly brilliant, Kevin Spacey telling some wonderful behind-the-scenes stories from his career, talking about his role as Artistic Director at The Old Vic, sharing his views on how to make theatre and culture more accessible to local communities, and introducing the incredible work of the Kevin Spacey Foundation. Once official proceedings has finished, we had around one minute for a photo-call with VIPs, in front of the JW3 branding. Then a private dinner was hosted by philanthropist Dame Vivien Duffield for invited guests, which we were also privileged to photograph. We won’t share any details from the dinner itself, but one thing we’ll say is… if you’re lucky enough to be able to get a table at Zest, do it. The food is absolutely wonderful – Chefs Josh Katz and Eran Tibi should be very proud of what they’re achieving in this new culinary hotspot.
