A Legal Affair: UJIA at Mishcon De Reya
ByEarly this morning our team were at the beautiful offices of Mishcon de Reya in central London to photograph an event of the UJIA Legal Division. This was a fascinating morning, featuring Lord Pannick QC in conversation with eloquent father-and-son duo Richard and Daniel Susskind, speaking about their new book ‘The Future of the Professions’.
Whilst Lord Pannick QC is described by Chambers UK 2016 as a “Superstar of the Bar. One of the top QCs”, to say the Susskind duo are impressive is also an understatement. Richard is an Emeritus Gresham Professor of Law, President of the Society for Computers and Law, and lectures around the world on many topics. His son Daniel is a lecturer in Economics at Balliol College, Oxford University, and previously worked in the British Government – in the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit and as a Senior Policy Adviser at the Cabinet Office.
This was not a small topic to cover, indeed the Susskinds set out how our future will look. They predict the decline of today’s professions and look at what will replace them, arguing that “in an Internet society, we will neither need nor want doctors, teachers, accountants, architects, the clergy, consultants, lawyers, and many others, to work as they did in the 20th century. The Future of the Professions explains how ‘increasingly capable systems’ – from telepresence to artificial intelligence – will bring fundamental change in the way that the ‘practical expertise’ of specialists is made available in society.”
It was an enlightening, thought-provoking, exciting, and slightly frightening morning, all in aid of a tremendously good cause, UJIA. Here are a few of our favourite images…
